A well made, Victorian vesta case. Made from sterling silver and the lid has a gilt interior, the body may have had, but it has faded.
The overall condition is great, wit a few light surface scratches and 3 or so, small dents to the front. Nothing that changes the shape away from the function of the piece, meaning it will still do the job it was intended to do. There is a good suspension ring to one side, the striker is in a tidy condition and the lid and hinge work as they should.
The hallmarks are for Birmingham, the dare stamp shows 1899 – 1900, so just on the cusp of the era. The makers mark is H M, Henry Matthews was a silversmith based in Birmingham. Their first mark was registered in 1894, mainly remembered for small, detailed and intricate silver items. He produced a range of hair brushes, cigarette cases, frames, hat pins, card cases, buttons and many other items. Production stopped in 1930.

This is a preloved item and as such, will have some signs of wear and use. I have run this through an ultrasonic cleaner and then hit it up with some tarnish guard.
